Hippolyte or Hippolyta was the queen of the Amazons in Greek mythology.
Heracles was tasked with obtaining Hippolyte's golden belt. The queen had once received this belt from Ares, the god of war, for her courage. Heracles was welcomed hospitably by the queen. Hippolyte admired this handsome, strong man and willingly gave up her belt.
But they had not taken into account the ever-jealous Hera. This goddess disguised herself as an Amazon and stirred up the women with the story that Heracles wanted to steal their beloved queen. Immediately, the Amazons grabbed their weapons, jumped on their horses and prepared to attack. A great battle ensued, in which Heracles killed Hippolyta and thus obtained her belt after all.
