The Abduction of Europa Veronese Design

In Greek mythology, Europa was a Phoenician princess who caught the lustful eye of Zeus, the supreme god.

According to the best-known version of the story, the young Europa was playing with her friends on the beach near Sidon one day when Zeus was struck by the girl's charms. To escape the gaze of his wife Hera, but also so as not to frighten the girl with his divine appearance, Zeus transformed himself into a white bull. When Europa playfully climbed onto the back of the magnificent, friendly-looking animal, he ran with her into the sea and swam straight to the island of Crete, his birthplace. When the bull arrived in Crete, Zeus revealed his identity. The princess could not resist the god's advances, and the two had intercourse. Europa subsequently gave birth to three children: Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Sarpedon (according to the Iliad, the latter was the son of Laodamia and Zeus).
