Morana, also known as Marzanna or Morena, is the Slavic goddess of winter, death and the dormant earth. In parts of Poland, the Czech Republic and other Slavic countries, her effigy is still ceremonially drowned or burnt in the spring to mark the end of winter. Morana is both feared and respected; she represents not a definitive end, but a necessary phase in an endless cycle, as her ritual death each year paves the way for the return of spring.
