Dadźbóg (or Dazhbog) is one of the most important gods in Slavic mythology. He is the sun god and god of fire, whose name literally means ‘the giving god’ or ‘day god’. As the son of the sky god Svarog, he was regarded by the ancient Slavs as the bestower of light, warmth, fertility and happiness. In mythical tales, he is often described as the sun travelling through the sky in a chariot. It was believed that he lived in a golden palace and was let out in the morning by his daughters (the Zorya) to illuminate the world. He is also sometimes regarded as the mythical ancestor of all Slavic peoples.
