Bronzed Greek Hero Achilleus Figurine 26cm Veronese Design
Achilles (Latin) or Achilleus (Ancient Greek: Ἀχιλλεύς, Akhilleús[1]) is a figure from Greek mythology. He is the most important hero of the Trojan War and the protagonist of Homer’s *Iliad*. Homer describes the hero as the fairest, bravest, strongest and most exalted of all heroes. Later legends (Statius) describe Achilles as being vulnerable only in his heel. This ultimately led to his death; he died from a poisoned arrow that struck him in the heel. The term ‘Achilles’ heel’ derives from this story.
Achilles was the son of Peleus, king of the Myrmidons in Thessaly, Greece, and the Nereid Thetis, daughter of Nereus, grandson of Aiakos (Aeacus) and thus a descendant of Zeus. He is often referred to as ‘Peleid’ or ‘Aiakid’, epithets that recall the lineage of the swift-footed Achilles. Together with Deidameia, daughter of King Lykomedes of Skyros, he had a son, Neoptolemus, who was also a prominent hero of the Trojan War.
