Nemesis was also adopted by the Romans and retained her old name. Triumphant generals offered sacrifices to her, and during the Empire, she was the patroness of gladiators.
Her origins remain shrouded in mystery. Her mother is the primordial goddess of the night named Nyx. Her father is thought to be Erebos or Oceanus.
