The Sphinx of Thebes is a famous creature from Greek mythology, a winged female monster with a lion's body and a woman's head, who terrorized the city of Thebes by posing a riddle and killing those who failed to answer, until Oedipus solved it, causing her to self-destruct. Her infamous riddle was, "What has four feet in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?" to which Oedipus correctly answered "Man" (referring to crawling, walking, and using a cane).
