The significance of Jesus' death lies in the sacrifice Jesus made according to the gospels (Mark 10:45). His death is seen as a sacrifice in the New Testament (Hebrews 10:4-10). The sacrifices in the Old Testament should be seen as foreshadowing or anticipating Jesus' death. The animals sacrificed (especially the lambs) already pointed to the fact that payment of debt requires blood. John the Baptist designated Jesus as the Lamb of God (John 1:29). Through his death, Jesus paid the debt of sin (Hebrews 9:11,12).
