Typhon, the Greek Scourge of Olympus - Veronese Design
Typhon (or Typhoeus) is the ultimate personification of the brutal, destructive forces of nature in Greek mythology. As the youngest son of Gaia and Tartarus, this hundred-headed, fire-breathing giant challenged Zeus for dominion over the cosmos. His rebellion was the greatest ordeal faced by the Olympian gods. A summary of the mythical events: The first attack: When Typhon attacked Mount Olympus, the Olympian gods were so terrified that they fled in panic to Egypt and transformed themselves into animals. The battle with Zeus: Only Zeus bravely remained behind. In their epic struggle, Typhon managed to temporarily overpower Zeus, severed his tendons (nerves) and hid them in the Corycian Cave. The rescue: Hermes and Aegipan (Pan) managed to secretly steal the tendons back and healed Zeus. The defeat: Empowered by lightning and thunder, Zeus pursued Typhon all the way to Mount Etna in Sicily. There, Zeus defeated the giant once and for all by hurling the volcano upon him. It is still believed that Typhon’s subterranean fury is responsible for the volcanic eruptions of Mount Etna.
