Amphitrite, the Goddess of the Sea
In Greek mythology, Amphitrite is the goddess of the sea and the wife of Poseidon. As a Nereid (sea nymph) and daughter of Nereus and Doris, she embodies the calm or turbulent sea. She is known for her role as queen of the ocean and mother of Triton.
Poseidon chose her as his wife when she performed a ritual dance with her sisters. However, she refused and fled. Poseidon then sent a dolphin after her. The dolphin managed to bring her back. After marrying her, he rewarded the dolphin by turning it into a constellation and placing it in the sky (see Dolphin).
