Leonidas was koning van Sparta (ca. 489-480 v.Chr.) die beroemd werd door zijn heldhaftige laatste stand met 300 Spartanen in de slag bij Thermopylae tegen de Perzen. Hij stierf tijdens deze slag, maar zijn daad werd een symbool van moed en een inspiratie voor andere Grieken in de strijd tegen de Perzische invasie.
