Aeolus was the Greek god of the winds, appointed by Zeus as their guardian. He guarded the four winds in a cave on his mythical island of Aeolia: Boreas (north wind), Notos (south wind), Eurus (east wind) and Zephyrus (west wind). Aeolus could occasionally release the winds at the command of the gods, which could cause storms.
