Narcissus was a handsome young man who did not return the love of others, including the nymph Echo.
As punishment for his indifference, he fell in love with his own reflection in the water.
He was so enchanted by his appearance that he stared at his reflection constantly, unable to eat, drink or sleep.
He tried to embrace his ‘beloved’, but every time he touched the surface of the water, the image faded.
Eventually, Narcissus died of exhaustion and grief, and a daffodil flower grew from his body.
The myth of Narcissus is a warning against excessive self-love and lack of empathy for others.
