A grimoire is a magic book containing various recipes for curing certain ailments, conjuring or summoning demons (theürgie), making talismans and amulets, and for casting or removing curses.
Grimoires are strongly associated with theurgy, the invocation and direction of supernatural beings (deities), and one sometimes speaks of ars notoria in this context. Such literature circulated mainly in manuscripts well into the early modern period.
