Mary or Maryam, Miriam, was the mother of Jesus according to the New Testament.
For Catholics, she is the most important saint. In the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church, Mary as Mother of God has an important role in the life of faith. The discipline within theology that focuses specifically on her is called mariology. Various liturgical feasts and high festivals are celebrated in her honour. In the Orthodox Church, the common expression for Mary is Theotokos (Mother of God).
