ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE BIRTH OF JESUS
In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to the city of Nazareth in Galilee, to a girl who had been married off to a man called Joseph, a descendant of David. The girl's name was Mary. Gabriel entered her house and said, "Greetings Mary, you are blessed, the Lord is with you." She was startled violently on hearing his words and wondered what this greeting meant. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, God has bestowed his favour on you. Listen, you will conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will become a great man and be called Son of the Most High, and God, the Lord, will give him the throne of his father David. For ever and ever he will be king over the people of Jacob, and his kingship will have no end."

Mary asked the angel: "How will that happen? After all, I have never had intercourse with a man." The angel replied, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you like a shadow. Therefore, the child who is born will be called holy and Son of God. Listen, your relative Elisabet is also pregnant with a son, despite her advanced age. She is now, even though she was thought to be barren, in the sixth month of her pregnancy, for before God nothing is impossible." Mary said, "The Lord I want to serve: let what you have said happen to me." Then the angel let her alone again.
