His election in 2013 was historic: he was the first pope in 1,200 years who was not from Europe. Moreover, he was the first South American and the first Jesuit to hold the papacy. As leader of the Holy See, he broke new ground, with a focus on simplicity and social justice.
Francis came to be known as a humble and innovative leader of the Catholic Church during his 12-year pontificate.
