Murmillo Gladiator with Scutum en Gladius - Veronese Design

A murmillo was a heavyweight gladiator in ancient Rome, often recognised by a large rectangular shield (scutum), a short thrusting sword (gladius) and a helmet with a crest resembling a fish. Historians believe that Spartacus himself also fought as a murmillo before leading the great slave revolt in 73 BC.

Characteristics of the Fight Opponent: Often fought against a retiarius (the net-fighter with a net and trident) or a thraex.
