In the Middle Ages, a Knight Hospitaller was a member of a religious order of knights who, in addition to fighting, were trained in medicine and devoted themselves to caring for the sick and pilgrims. The best-known historical group are the Knights Hospitaller (now the Order of Malta), founded around 1113. Even in modern conflicts, such as in Ukraine, medical volunteer battalions are sometimes referred to by this name.
