Charlemagne (Charles the Great in Dutch) was a Frankish king and the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire who reigned from 800 to 814, uniting large parts of Western and Central Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. He is considered one of the most important rulers of the early Middle Ages for his military campaigns, administrative reforms, and promotion of the Carolingian Renaissance. He is also called the "Father of Europe" for his influence on the continent.
