Joan of Arc, nicknamed the Virgin of Orleans, is a national heroine of France. She was born during the French Civil War (1410-1435) and played a crucial role during the Hundred Years' War between England and France (1337-1453).
She reported having visions of St Catherine, St Margaret and the Archangel Michael, among others, who told her to help the Dauphin Charles VII and free France from the English. During her early years in the army, she had successes, but in the later years she suffered losses and was captured by the enemy.
At about 19, she was sentenced to death by a partisan church court and died at the stake in Rouen. Twenty-five years after her death, Pope Calixtus III had the trial reviewed. She was found innocent and given the title of martyr on 7 July 1456. She was beatified by the Roman Catholic Church in 1909 and was canonised in 1920.
