Viking Berserker with Axe and Shield
A berserker was a feared Norse elite warrior from the Viking Age who fought in a trance-like, ecstatic rage.
The meaning and origin of the word probably derive from Old Norse ‘ber’ (bear) and ‘serk’ (skin/shirt), meaning ‘bear-skin wearer’. They wore the skins of bears or wolves to instil fear and channel the animal’s strength.
They were deeply devoted to the supreme god Odin (Wodan), who, according to the myths, bestowed this ‘war fever’ upon them.
