The birth of Jesus is described in the biblical gospels according to Luke and Matthew. It forms a central theme in Christianity that is remembered and celebrated every year at Christmas.
As applies to all stories about Jesus, a distinction is made between the religious meaning in Christianity and in a historical sense. The first meaning is mainly determined in theology. The second meaning falls within the search for the historical Jesus, by historians using the historical-critical method.
