Murmillo Gladiator with Gladius en Parma - Veronese Design
This statue depicts a gladiator in the Murmillo style – one of the most popular combatants in the Roman Colosseum – wielding a deadly gladius.
A parma is a small, round shield used by certain types of Roman gladiators. The shield offered less protection than a large rectangular legionary shield, but gave the gladiator extra speed and freedom of movement in the arena.
