Our Sun is a star of spectral class G2. This means that it is a yellow star, much hotter and heavier than the average star, but much smaller than the blue giant stars. The calculated lifespan of a star like the Sun, i.e. the time during which nuclear reactions provide it with energy, is 10 billion years.

The life cycle of the Sun can be roughly divided into four phases. In each of these phases, the Sun looks very different and obtains its energy from a different source:

protostar; the Sun during its formation
main sequence star; the present state
red giant; in the future
white dwarf; final phase in the very distant future
