Important Features of Sofia, the Gnostic Goddess of Wisdom
Sophia is a central figure in Gnosticism who represents divine wisdom. She is seen as the female side of God, a cosmic primal force, the World Soul and sometimes as the bride of Christ. According to Gnostic myth, she was expelled from the heavenly world, the Pleroma, and her desire to know the transcendent Father was the cause of the creation of the material world by her offspring, the Demiurge.
Key aspects of Sophia
Divine wisdom: Sophia is an embodiment of spiritual wisdom and insight. Her name literally means “wisdom” in Greek.
Feminine side of God: She is considered the feminine, creative force in God. In Judaism, this wisdom was represented by “Chokma”, in Greek Sophia, and in Christianity sometimes by the Holy Spirit.
Origin of the material world: According to Gnostic myth, Sophia sought to know the Father, which led to her expulsion from the Pleroma. Because of this action, the material world was created by a semi-divine being that emerged from her, the Demiurge.
Redemptive figure: She is also a figure who can be seen as the redemptive goddess and Mother of God in the Gnostic tradition.
