Important features of Saint Patrick
Saint Patrick was a Romano-British missionary and bishop who brought Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century. He was kidnapped by Irish pirates as a teenager, enslaved in Ireland, but managed to escape and later returned to spread Christianity. He used symbols such as the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity and, according to legend, drove all the snakes from the island, representing the eradication of paganism. His death anniversary, 17 March, is now celebrated as St Patrick's Day, Ireland's national holiday.
