There are several versions of the myth about Medusa. In one version of the myth, Medusa aroused Athena's wrath because Poseidon had raped her in Athena's temple. The furious Athena took revenge by turning Medusa's beautiful hair into a mass of writhing snakes. Furthermore, anyone who looked into Medusa's eyes would immediately turn to stone. From then on, her task was to turn as many people as possible to stone. Her sisters begged Athena to change her back. They said, ‘Let us be like her again!’ And so it came to pass, for Pallas Athena also turned them into Gorgons and then gave them eternal life.
