Azrael – in Arabic, “He who helps God” – is the name given in Islamic tradition to the “angel of death” (Malak al-Maut) who appears in the Koran. Much of what is believed about him is not part of official doctrine, but stems from legends or popular belief. For example, Azrael is said to separate the soul from the body, thereby causing death. He does not act independently, but always on the orders of Allah. He is also said to write down the names of newborns and cross out those of the deceased.
Non-Islamic traditions
This angel also appears in some traditions in Sikhism and Judaism. He is sometimes thought to be one of the angels who punish the dead in hell.
Although some sources speculate about a connection between Azrael and the human priest Ezra, he is usually depicted as an archangel with a long history. In Jewish mysticism, he is seen as the embodiment of evil, not necessarily evil or specifically evil itself. Azrael is sometimes depicted in the ‘Third Heaven’. In one of his forms, he has four faces and four thousand wings, and his entire body consists of eyes and tongues, corresponding in total to the number of people inhabiting the earth. He will be the last to die; in a large book, he writes the names of the newborns and erases the names of the dead.
