The Vikings or Norsemen were Scandinavian inhabitants of southern Norway, Denmark and Sweden. In many cases, a distinction is made between the two terms. The term ‘Normans’ refers to the entire population group, while the term ‘Vikings’ refers only to the seafaring part of that group that migrated from Scandinavia to Europe for trade, emigration, raids and conquests. The other Normans were inhabitants of present-day Norway, southern Sweden, Denmark and Iceland who lived from agriculture and livestock farming, crafts and trade. The current inhabitants of these countries – with the exception of the Sami in Norway and Sweden – are largely descendants of the Vikings.
