Mars was the Roman god of war, but also had some fertility functions in addition. He was known to all Italic peoples.
He was the son of Juno (the queen of the gods) and Jupiter, the father of the gods (or of Juno alone, impregnated with the help of a magical flower).
Originally primarily the god of fertility and protector of livestock, he later merged with the Greek god Ares and became primarily associated with battle, death and war. His Etruscan equivalent is Laran.
Mars is the most revered god of the Roman Empire, probably because his sons (Romulus and Remus) are seen as the founders of Rome.
The month of March and the planet Mars are named after this god.
