The centaur (Latin: centaurus, also called kentaur, Ancient Greek: κένταυρος, kentauros or horse man) is a fable animal from Greek mythology, half man and half horse, or rather half man and three-quarters horse, because he has the full body of a horse, except for the head. He thus has six limbs: four horse legs and two human arms, and he has two chests.

Centaurs are usually depicted as brutal, bestial creatures and depicted with a bow or a club as a weapon. The latter in particular further emphasises the wild element in his character. The centaur Nessus could not keep his hands off Deianeira, Heracles' wife, and was therefore killed by Heracles.

There is one exception: the wise centaur Cheiron, who lived reclusive and secluded from the other centaurs. He was the teacher-educator of several Greek heroes, of Jason and Achilles and of the hunter Aktaion.
Centaurs also appear in The Chronicles of Narnia and the stories of Harry Potter.
