Taranis is a Celtic god, the god of thunder. Taranis means 'thunderer' and the word 'taran' still means thunder in modern Welsh and Breton.
Taranis was compared by the Romans to their god of thunder, Jupiter. He is also called the wheel god, because of the attributes with which he is always depicted: the sun's blade and the flash of light that accompanies thunder.
Taranis was also the god of knowledge and magic.
