Very detailed statue of Skadi - Norse Goddess of Winter, Hunting and Mountains. He
Skaði is a mountain goddess from the Nordic mythology, the daughter of the giant Thjazi. As the wife of the Wanengod Njord she is a Wanengod herself. She is also called öndurgoð and öndurdís, "Ski Goddess". She is also goddess of winter and locally of hunting.
Her father was killed by the gods by mistake, so Skaði went to Asgard to avenge him. The gods feared the destructive power of winter. They promised to forgo her revenge if she could choose a husband among them and they could make her laugh. And so they promised her that she could choose a husband among the gods, but she could only base her choice on their feet.
Skaði chose Njörd, the god of the sea, hoping that it was Baldr. Odin also turned Thjazi's eyes into two shining stars. As Loki also made her laugh, she renounced, made peace and took her new husband with her.
After some time, however, the two separated, as Skaði preferred the mountains and Njord wanted to be by the sea. According to some myths (the Ynglingatal) Skadi also gave birth to several sons of the supreme god Odin.
Etymologically, the name is related to the word skull, shadow and damage, so she would represent a damaging force. Skaði is sometimes also mentioned as the name from which Scandinavia is derived. The proper name appears at least in the oldest place names of Scandinavia.
