She arose from Chaos and, together with Heaven (Uranus), gave birth to the first gods, such as the Titans. Gaia symbolises fertility, strength and the harmony and balance of nature. The name Gaia is also used in the Gaia hypothesis, which regards the Earth as a self-regulating system, and can refer to a symbol for the natural world.
