A gargoyle is usually a figure carved from stone, located on the edge of a building's roof. This sculpture – often a sinister representation of a devil, monster or bird of prey – serves as a rainwater drain, preventing rainwater from flowing down the façade. Gargoyles have been used since ancient times, but are often associated with Gothic architecture.
