Baron Samedi (French for ‘Baron Saturday’) is a male deity (Loa) in Caribbean Voodoo. He is the Loa of death and is primarily worshipped in the Haitian form of the religion: Vodou. Festivals are held in his honour from 30 October to 3 November. According to some followers, he is married to the female Loa Madame Brigitte. He is the head of the Guédé, a group of Loas who act as his helpers and guide the spirits of the deceased to the afterlife. He is at odds with the other Loas.
Baron Samedi decides on life and death for every human being. He determines when someone is born and when someone dies. For this reason, he is often invoked in hoodoo rituals. In these, he is asked to allow a sick person (or even someone under a curse) to survive, or conversely, to cause an enemy to die. Offerings are made in connection with this.
Baron Samedi is depicted in two ways. Either as a man in classic evening dress with slippers and glasses, one lens of which is broken, or as a grave cross with these clothes draped around it. When he is invoked during a ritual, the participants are usually dressed in black, white or purple.
