Baphomet is an occult deity and symbol whose name appeared in the 14th century during the persecution of the Knights Templar, who were accused of worshipping it. The modern image, the ‘Sabbatic Goat,’ was created in 1856 by occultist Éliphas Lévi, who used it as a symbol for the reconciliation of opposites and esoteric knowledge. Although often confused with the devil, Baphomet represents a balance between masculine and feminine forces and the unity of nature, and the symbol has been adopted by occultists and Satanists.
