Raphael (Greek: Ραφαηλ, Raphael, the Septuagint translation of the Hebrew: רְפָאֵל, rephaël, ‘God heals’, ‘God proves himself a healer’) was an angel, later an archangel, in Judaism and Christianity.
Raphael does not appear in the New Testament. The Church Fathers did, however, write regularly about Raphael, and he is consistently described as one of the first archangels to be created, who, together with other angels, torments Satan. Here too, he was regarded as the angel of healing, was portrayed as a heavenly physician, or is the angel with the holy oil.
In the early 5th century, a basilica was dedicated to Raphael on an island near Alexandria.
His feast day is celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church on 29 September, together with the archangels Michael and Gabriel.
