Aengus The Irish God of Youth and Love Veronese Design
Aengus is the Irish god of love, youth, dreams and poetic inspiration, a prominent figure within the Tuatha Dé Danann. He is the son of the gods Dagda and Boann, and is also known as Mac Óg (“young son”) or Mac ind Óc. Well-known myths describe how he transforms himself into a swan to save his beloved and how he is involved in romantic entanglements with other gods and heroes.

Important Features of Aengus
- God of love and youth: He is often compared to Cupid and symbolises youth, romantic love and enchanting inspiration.
- Son of Dagda and Boann: His birth is magical, as his father Dagda stopped the sun for nine months so that Aengus could be born in a single day.
- Enchantment and transformation: In the myth ‘The Dream of Aengus,’ he falls in love with a woman who only appears in his dreams, after which he finds her in swan form and transforms himself into a swan to be with her.
- Symbols: His most iconic symbol is the swan. He is also often depicted with four birds circling his head, symbolising his enchanting words, and sometimes with a harp because of his connection to music and poetry.
